BLOG POST #1California has put a price on plastic or paper bags at grocery stores. Using reusable bags is much more environmentally-friendly and stores are encouraging it. This new law can only do good in the new year.
I took these photos because I love sunflowers! My partner used one of these flower photo's on her Blog Post but I took them because I saw the plastic surrounding the flowers protecting them from the rain. But somehow the drops on the plastic made it even more beautiful. I think that this shows that we, as humans are put in the position where we need to protect the natural world. Protect what was on this Earth, what was given to us as a gift before even we where here.
I just think that this picture is funny and cute because it was raining. I still have fun even if the weather isn't sunny.

Catholic churches teach that homosexuality is immoral and against the bible. Many people boycott Catholics because of this belief. I believe that everybody should be able to express themselves the way that they want to.
This photo shows emptiness. Even in the rain, the fountain is still running. This might be wasteful. Liberty Station is deserted. There is not one person standing around. These very rare for liberty station. I think this shows the vulnerability of rain in San Diego. Everyone hides inside when it rains here.

Learning about Space
Add a paragraph on the nature of space. What struck you in learning how the everywhere is the center of the universe?
Space is everywhere. The Big Bang was actually just not the universe, but everything stretching out. Not everything in the world or universe, but literally everything. Long before people or life on Earth, there is no telling where it came from or how it came about. It was just there. The center of the universe is everywhere because the universe is never-ending. The center of everything, is everything. The idea of infinity is really amazing to me. The very idea of the universe is infinity in itself. This is so mother-f-ing AMAZING! That is so outlandish, unfathomable. It doesn't even make sense. It's not a physical thing to believe in but it's the only thing to explain where we are, where we live and what we are engulfed in.

This is my first draft of my map for our Field guide of San Diego. We focused on the significant community parks in a 5-mile radius of our school. Some of these parks include Balboa Park, Ocean Beach Park, Tecelote Canyon Park(which is a park that I grew up next to and visited frequently as a child. This park was special to me because I walked here daily with my neighbors or my nanny. My best friends grew up playing baseball here and I remember hours of watching their games here. I think that it is really cool that I lived so close to school that I can include my neighborhood park in our Field Guide.), Petco Park, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, and other parks like NTC Park and Point Loma Community Park. Parks are a good way to spend time outside and meet new people and connect with friends. One of my partners focused on Northern San Diego, and my other partner made a enlarged map of just Coronado to focus on only the parks located on the island. And I did everything else. I think that the critique we got made us really focus. We planned to use colors and make the map all on one piece of paper so that it is neater and easier to read and understand on our next draft of out map.

Final Map for Field Guide
For most of the week when this was assigned and due, I was absent. I was only in class that week for about an hour. I helped color the green part of the map representing the land. But the leader of my group criticized my technique with the colored pencil. The map looks nice and I am proud of the research I did on the first draft of the map because without knowing the park names and their location, we wouldn't have that finished the final map. I think that I contributed greatly with the research I did to find most of these parks. I wasn't physically there to help color in and go over in sharpie, I gave the first draft to my partners to copy the names and locations of the parks. I think that they did a great job without me since I wasn't able to be there and I'm happy that my name can still be on it even though I was absent. Hopefully, my research helped in the making of the final draft.
Article on Light
We don't see light, we see with light. This makes me wonder if light is even real, if it exists. Scientists say it is both a particle and a wave, so I can touch light? It makes sense that it can be a wave somehow, but we can see it, so this is where it gets a little bit confusing. It wasn't explained how it is actually both a particle and a wave but that is the only way for us to make sense out of it. I thought that it was so interesting that colors aren't real. Now this I can make some sense of. I think that if I was a scientist, my whole world would change. I would love to look at everything in life in a scientific manner. I see philosophy, I see meaning. But I don't see facts, I don't see the science or an equation that makes that reality true.

Learning about photography(Articles)
Pick two ideas that struck you from the in-class articles on photographic technique. Answer the following questions for both. What about this technique strikes you? How do you plan to incorporate this photographic technique into your work?
Vertical lines: This is a photo from one of the articles that I read in class about photography techniques. This photo really inspired me. It looks like the subject, but the yellow wall is so bright that it pops out of the picture and makes it take up a lot more of the photo. This technique makes the photo much more intricate and the vertical lines create this mood of peace. It looks like the photo is put together, it is purposeful. I learned from the second article about "Lines", that vertical lines give off a vibe of tranquility and this photo is a perfect example of that. I think that the dark green also allows that point to get to the viewer.
Composition is how you take the picture. Choosing the focal length, aperture, and angle are key to creating the composition that you want. *Choosing a wider aperture will blur the background and foreground, also notice corner shading(vignetting) which will keep the viewers eye inside the frame for longer. The aperture also adjusts the brightness, it is the size of the lens opening. When it is a smaller opening, less light will come in, when it is larger, more light goes into the camera. But the smaller the number is on the camera settings, the bigger the lens opening is.

Practice Phtotos
I was in Mammoth this week. I took this photo on the car ride back home. This photo shows diagonal and jagged lines. This creates a sense of unease. It was so beautiful in Mammoth. Most of the mountains that were in higher elevation were covered in smooth snow so they didn't create this effect. This photo is from lower down so there is less now covering it.
This photo has a lot of crooked lines. This distorts the photo and confuses the reader. The diagonal line in the top left causes a lot of unsureness. The angle this photo was taken at has a lot to do with composition of the photo.
These are my notes on photography from reading the articles on composition, lines, the fibonacci spiral, and the rule of thirds.
|
I like this photo because it shows detail. I think that the composition is very meaningful and tells a story. It is taken from the side so that the light hits it just right. I think that this uses the fibonacci spiral. This is a photography technique to attract the viewers eyes to certain area's. Creating a natural flow of the photo. The spiral starts at my pupil.
This photo shows vertical lines. I love tranquility that this shows. The elephants stand far apart from each other to create a sense of independence, together. This was taken at the Liberty Public Market from a vendor selling their handmade jewelry. This is my favorite photo. Each necklace is unique. And the main focus in this photo is vertical lines to create a sense of peace which is executed perfectly. But, there are also lots of horizontal lines in the wood, this creates an awesome effect. These vertical lines in behind the subject allow the background to have a sense of fluency. There is a lack of change in the background. It's almost as if it is "timeless", while the elephants are attracting all of the attention. This is a good pairing because there is a certain comfort in staying the same, being frozen, repeating the same thing over and over again, and tranquility goes hand in hand with being at peace or calm. This photo is just perfect.

Lighting in Photography
I learned about three point lighting. There is the key light, fill light, and back light. These all have very important uses and are unique. The backlight sets the subject apart from the background. The key light is the main light that is providing the main light. The subject should be 6-12 inches from the camera. This is a useful tip for my personal pictures that I take on my own camera at home when my friends and I are taking cute pictures together. The subject should also be below the camera. I don't know if these tips are useful in our outings because I usually am taking photo's of my surroundings, the actual place not the people, but maybe the people have a lot to do with that place. I don't know how many portraits I will be taking, but I was very excited about learning the techniques for portrait shooting because I think that type of photography is very beautiful and useful in everyday life when taking pictures on vacation and at the beach and such. Key light is always higher than the subject so that all of their features are highlighted. The fill light and key light set to equal strengths is known as 1:1 ratio lighting. This ratio effects what the f-stop is on your camera. We also talked about hair lighting, and banding in images like ripples in water. I don't remember exactly how the ratio is effecting the f-stop which I think I need some help with.
First studio session:
I didn't learn that much from the first session because my group didn't have very much time because it was very fast-moving, short session. This was okay though, because we still got to play around with the lights. We tried just using the back light, by itself. This had a very cool effect on my partner's photo. We also turned off the key light and just used the fill light and backlight. I think that the backlight has the most effect on a photo. Obviously, the other lights change the brightness and shadows drastically. But, the back light actually creates something in a photo.
|
Second studio session:
I had a lot more fun in my second session of using lighting in photography. I had a lot of fun people in my group, and we all worked together to get good pictures because we wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to use the equipment. We were able to execute the things we envisioned easier because we had ideas already in our head and we read the article and watched the video on what type of lights give different effects. We mostly changed the key light. The backlight was something we utilized frequently in our images. And, I couldn't see the effect that the soft light was having on the photo's, it got confusing when we were trying to use it to create an effect and we didn't know exactly what it was doing.

Lenses and Prisms
In class, we played with prisms. I liked looking at things closer up and then farther away. Sometimes, it served as a magnifying glass and other times it just made everything really blurry. When we went outside, everyone was walking around and stumbling over things. Chloe has a video of jack looking at a tree and then he reaches out for it and he trips but he just looks really stupid because he has a prism up to his eye. It is hilarious! A lot of prisms made it seem like things were closer or farther then they appear which is the coolest effect I think because it confuses you and people just look really silly. I already knew that prisms made rainbows and I didn't really test out that a lot, but that is always entrances me. A piece of plastic or glass or whatever it is can make a rainbow from sunlight. That is just so cool. I think that also when we put our phone flashlights up to it made different types of rainbows. I wonder how prisms are made, or what they are made of. Why does your vision get all weird when you look through a prism. I understand that light is effecting it, but they seem like really weird things to me. Are prisms inside of glasses, or is it the same type of science in light and vision and stuff? They seem like they kind of connect. But it's mostly about vision with glasses, whereas prisms are about light.

Sagan's Final Interview
- We discussed the phrase “science is a way of thinking, a way of skeptically interrogating the universe” from Sagan’s final interview. Write a paragraph on why is this phrase significant? Write a second paragraph on how it differs or is similar to previous definitions of science you’ve heard?
The controversy/conflict of religion and science. Religion requires belief and blind trust. Science is the exact opposite, you shouldn't believe something even if there is some sort of of evidence that it is true. "Interrogating the universe". Sagan said, "science is a way of thinking, a way of skeptically interrogating the universe". He said just before he had died. I think he was conveying that science is never-ending. It has a way to control all of our lives and bodies. We will never really know the truth. We can research and study, but who says that our findings are the truth? Science is something we made up. It's not real. (And now, I'm not sure that this is what Carl Sagan was saying, but now I am spewing some of my other thoughts that are related to this.) Everything we know, is science. But, we made up science. So, how will we ever know what is true or not. We made up colors like purple and blue. We named them and called them "colors". What does that even mean? Every word that we speak, someone had to make up, right? Science is imagination. However far your imagination can go, is the deeper science that you can learn. Everything that we think about, opens up new doors to learn the "science" of something else. Isn't everything science?
I've heard that science is studying. Science is facts. Are there things that are known to be true in all cases, is that the absolute truth? I don't know that for certain. That is why I think that religion give you an easy way out. You don't have to work so hard to believe something for certain. People that are comfortable in their religion, may think that asking the world questions is too hard and too confusing. Scientists know things. They put all of their trust in research. As religious people put all of their trust in a holy book and a higher power. Science is reality.
James Webb Telescope
- What are your thoughts on the James Webb Space Telescope and the search for first light? Is it a worthwhile venture to spend $10 billion dollars to see back into deep time?
I think that this telescope has all the best intentions and can bring a lot of information to us about this universe. 10 billion dollars is a lot of money, that is more money than there are people in the world. And what does money even mean? We literally just print paper money and there is all this confusing stuff about the economy and stuff which is probably important for the government and the way that our lives are built and work. But, why does science cost money? Why does money matter? What even is money? IT's literally just paper, but somehow it has the power to control our lives and economy and stuff. But we gave it that power. Also, why do we want to look so far back into time. We can't change anything that happened back then. What are we supposed to learn by looking that far back into time? People weren't even relevant at that time so it's not like we can learn from them or their mistakes. How will looking so far back into space, benefit the human race?

Water
- Take a quote out of the text we read on water. Write the quote down. Add a brief comment as to why you chose that quote. What is significant about it? What questions do you have as a result of this text?
"Life began on Earth about a billion years later (3.6 billion years ago), initially in the oceans. Although many species now live on land, they still need water to live and grow: humans, for example, could go without food for about two months, but we'd die of thirst if we went more than a week or so without a drink. "
Water is the beginning of our existence. We all start with water and we will all end with it. Water is at the core of everything we have ever known. Imagine life without water. I think that a lot of people take water for granted. It is truly a beautiful thing and it keeps everything alive. Water is life. Is water alive? Is it like a plant, or is it just a resource that we use? Water can move, right? But is that due to other factors like wind and human interference?
Do animals and plants survive the same way without water? It might depend on their adaptations?
Polar Nature of Water
Water is in three different forms. Solid, liquid, and gas. You can change the form of water buy adjusting it's temperature. When you increase the temperature of water, it turns into a steam, in it's gas form. When you cool down water and get it to below freezing point, it turns into ice, water in it's solid form. And if you heat up ice, it will melt back into water, it's natural liquid form. This is also how precipitation works. It's the cycle of water. I remember learning about this from Ms.Hutchins, my elementary school science teacher.
Pale Blue Dot
- What strikes you about the pale blue dot speech in light of the current state of the world? Are Sagan’s comments still relevant? Why or why not?
The pale blue dot is everything that we know, that we've seen and everything that we wonder about. A lot of bad/weird stuff is happening in the world right now. There are a lot of things that I wish didn't happen here. The pale blue dot speech puts things into perspective for a lot of people. Life is so much more than any of us. The universe, and not even our universe, just everything, things that we know about and the unknown, the things that we have seen in photo's from outer space and the rest that is still out there, we are miniscule compared to life and everything itself. I don't even know what to call the rest of everything except literally just "everything". It is so mind-boggling that there is other universes that we don't know about, like what does our world even mean. There could be things that don't know about us just like we don't know about them. To think about this, is to go outside of anything comfortable, to go outside of even things that you imagined that you haven't even seen but may exist, it is beyond that. This "everything" that I talk about is so big and scary. I probably will not know much more about it before I die in this lifetime, but that won't even matter than because that is just my lifetime. In my mind, I am at the center of everything, I only see through my eyes, so everything I know about, I am in the center of because it is in my perspective. I will never get another perspective. And there is no proof that I will or may come back in another form. Most of the people in this classroom right now, I won't remember by that time. The things that seem so familiar and important to me now, will mean nothing. Not just to future me, but for everyone else. It makes me sad for some reason to think about that. My life means nothing, only to me and people close to me. There is so much left out there and it makes me sad that i don't know what could potentially be. I don't think that it should make me sad, I think that it should make me curious, but for some reason thinking about the big "everything" makes me sad. It's just so scary.
Little Italy
I don't have my pictures from Little Italy yet. But I am working on lighting and focus. Also, I don't know anything about light room or whatever that is. Here are some other awesome pictures from Balboa Park and Sunset Cliffs

Water
Read this text on water use in cities and begin this week’s blog post by answering these questions:
- Estimate how much water you use per week
- How might you be able to cut back?
- What struck you about the article?
- What are other ways cities might save on water usage in the future? What plans should we pursue?
What strikes you about “The Most Astounding Fact”?
Energy passes through all of us. Energy never dies. We all share energy with everyone here and everyone who lived, plants, animals, the stars. We literally come from the stars. We hold the energy that stars held, their energy is inside of us and it will never die. This is a beautiful thing. "We are part of the universe, we are in this universe. But perhaps what is more important than both of those facts, is that the universe is us." He talked about how a lot of people feel small when they look up at the stars and the whole wide universe, but how he feels big because all of that, what he sees, is in him.
What was the most profound thought you gained from watching Chris Emdin’s keynote, We Got It From Here, Thank You For Your Service?
This speech was absolutely amazing! I loved the way that he talked so quickly, but you could really understand what he was saying. He made a lot of great points about education and race in education. He used the word "urban" a lot. At first, I was confused about what the point was he was trying to convey. But the more he used the word urban, I started to really understand where he was going. He was very convincing, saying things like "Ya'll not with me", and just exciting the crowd really turned me on to his voice and in turn, what he was saying.
After looking at where San Diego gets its water and future population projections what do you think are ideas for how we manage water here?
None of our water in San Diego actually comes from here we get it from the Sierra Mountains in Northern California. Since we don't have access to water close to us and San Diego is a desert area, we have to be careful with our water usage. This is for all of southern California. As San Francisco has made regulations on water usage, San Diego has been making steps toward the same type of regulations and laws. The population in San Diego has been increasing rapidly because it is such a nice place to live and people are settling down and starting families here. As there are more people living here, the more water is being used. Everyone has to cut back on what water they are using so that we can share the limited water with all of the newer population living here and minimize usage all at once.

Problem Set: Energy Usage
Energy Use in San Diego
What are your thoughts on your own energy use in San Diego? What would you like to see San Diego do to develop energy supply in the future? Why? What is the relation between all types of energy harnessed on earth and the sun? Why is that significant? What questions do you have about energy generation?
My family has always sucked energy, we are a fairly large family and there are a lot of girls, we like to suck up energy. We have never been very energy-efficient. We frequently leave lights on when we are not home or not in the room, we leave fans on, keep things plugged in when they don't need to be, etc. My older sister has been urging the whole family to be more energy-efficient and my mom complains when she gets a very high energy bill every month. I notice a lot of people converting to solar panel energy and using the sun more frequently for light. Everytime my family drives to Palm Springs, we see the huge windmills spinning around and around creating efficient energy. Seeing those always makes me happy. All of our natural energy on this Earth comes from the sun.

Ideal City Problem Set
Explanation:
My ideal city was focused on being a environmentally stable community. We use electric cars/battery-powered. We farm our own crops and have our own cattle. We don't trust large companies to sell us genetically-modified food products. We reuse and recycle our water. The pipe leads to an off-site sanitation plant, but not too far, and then it gets sent back to us through the pipes. A large lake for water and swimming. small town. Local garden and food locally grown. Hospital close to housing for emergencies. A large homeless shelter to ensure that everybody has a home <3. |
Planet Earth II- Cities
I love planet Earth. I have been watching it since I was a little kid. I used to think it was kind of boring because I was a little kid and I couldn't sit still for long. But I have come to love it. Me and my dad would sit on our black couch and watch it for hours. They were beautiful films. This gives me some understanding of why I love nature and taking photo's of nature of now as I am older and I have a greater understanding of how it works and how the films were made. I must have been watching the first version of it since Planet Earth ll is fairly new. The Cities disc really surprised me. I thought that it may ruin Planet Earth for me since it was shot in large cities and that is just not what it was about for me. But it really took me by surprise. The imagery was beautiful and they did a really great job adjusting to a new environment. I really loved the segment on catfish eating pigeons in the Amazon. The leaping monkeys were hilarious. But my favorite by far, was the baby turtles in Mexico. These turtles hatched on the beach in Mexico, and they are naturally supposed to waddle their way to the ocean and swim away. But because Mexico beaches are now resort towns and party spots, known for crazy spring breaking. The flashing lights of clubs and bars and hotels attract the newly-hatched baby turtles to the city. They waddle their way into the streets and try to make their way to the bright lights. Turtles get stuck in the sewage drains, ran over by cars and are in great danger when they travel on land with drunk people on vacation. This story struck me the most because turtles have been my favorite animal since I was five. I watch videos on YouTube of baby turtles hatching and finding their way to the ocean to grow up. it is adorable and my favorite thing. I know that their mom leaves her eggs on the beach because it is a cultural thing or something, but that is already unfair to them and i just want to be their mom or something, but then these flashing bright lights in these crazy resort towns attract them and then end up putting them in danger and killing them. They are supposed to be living in the wild. They are a part of the natural world and those colorful lights and loud music is not a part of the natural environment that they are supposed to be in. This is why this species is in danger. This draws a parallel to us humans because when we are naive and fall into bad habits and situations, it is very hard for us to get out because we are so small compared to the world and space around us, we simply just aren't strong enough to control everything that happens. This is also like falling into companies for your job, and you are just stuck there for the rest of your life. It looked nice and would be able to provide you with what you needed, bnut it just suckled you in and it wasn't what you thought it it would be. And it is too late because if you quit that job working for a bad company, you risk not being able to provide for your family while you are looking for a new job. There are a lot of bad bad things in this world that you can get sucked into, and later on, when you want to get out, you may not be able to.
Scales of the Universe
This website reminded me of this video that my teacher showed my class in 8th grade on youtube. It zoomed in on the smallest of the smallest thing in the world and it would multiply the view as it zoomed out and showed larger and larger things, until the screen was filled with all of the space visible that is around us. But we could just keep guessing, and say that there is just more and more outside of that. This is absolutely amazing to me. This is what it is all about. We are not on Earth, we are simply floating around in a huge huge nothing. It is infinity. We don't know where it goes. If it stops. But space doesn't stop, it is space. In the video, there was a counter in the corner it was exponentially multiplying by ten. This video, this idea,. honestly shook me to the core. It just wakes me right up when I think about it. And then I can start asking questions that seem crazy, but can only make sense right now because this idea changes everything. It changes the rules of what matters. Nothing matters when you thing about this. What is matter? What is space?
Future exploration is everywhere. I might just have to become an astronaut because this just interests me so damn much. That doesn't really go along with my life plans, but what the hell am I supposed to do. There is never-ending things to explore. The science is just going to get better and better and there are places to go, infinity places to go. It's not like traveling around the world, and thinking that there is no way that you can travel to all the places in the world because there's just too many, it seems like that is impossible, like that is impossible because there is infinity places to go. When you travel to all these places on this Earth, there will always be another place to go. BUT, if you were immortal and you had the resources to travel everywhere in the world, you could. That's the truth that I know. You could travel to every place on your checklist of places in the world. But, in space, if you were immortal, it wouldn't matter. If you traveled, everywhere, there would always be more places to go. Literally every time that you finish doing something out there, there is a;ways more. That is what literal infinity is. That is what space is.
Don't even get me started on time in space, "space time", "space and time". It gets really good and confusing when I talk about that, but oh I love it. I just have so much to say, it is insane!!!!!!!!!! I never run out of stuff to say on this stuff. Everything connects!!!!!
oKAY THIS IS THE stuff that is crazy, literally insane, this is the stuff that gets me excited!

Alan Watt’s Secret to Life
"The fear of death is completely absurd." We have an instinct to live. It is natural for us. So it is a waste of time to worry about dying. I understand this because it's almost like what people are always saying, enjoy your life now, because you only live once or something. It seems annoying because it's been said so many times, but that is essentially what this guy is saying.
"When you demand the spontaneous process, you stop it." You don't have to live. Life goes on. When he says spontaneous, he is just saying what is natural. Life is natural, and when you force yourself to live or you demand too much from it, you just aren't living. This real life, reality is amazing. This life, whatever life may be, it is amazing.
Life is what you make it. "Instead of calling it work, realize that this is play." Life is what it is and you can do what you want. Everything around you is what is existence is and you are just a part of the spinning world. This quote/video didn't really have the language or depth that I was looking for to explain what life is, so I might keep looking for someone who can make sense of it, and put it into words better for me.

Elon Musk is Really Boring (Tunnels)
This article was fairly weird, but inspiring. This guy just does what he wants when he wants to. He makes his dreams come true, and even better, he has the funding for it because he is rich. His idea is pretty out there and we talked about complications that could make his ideal freeways underground unsuccessful. I wondered why we wouldn't make a subway in Los Angeles instead of these freeways because that is what they did in New York. W talked about how expensive a subway project would be, but then it was brought up about the cost of these underground roads. And that, is a hefty price. We talked about potential danger in Earthquakes and what would happen if you were underground during one. I think that flying would be pretty cool and if there were a natural disaster, we could take refuge in the air. I also don't understand why he thinks it is such a problem. This isn't harming anyone, why is this such a point of focus to solve this "problem"? It's not really even a problem. I just don't understand why this needs to be solved, if it's not threatening anybody. How about we solve world hunger, over-population, homelessness, create cures for illness. What are the long-term solutions for that? I don't really care about this "problem" because it is not important at all. I think someone may need to explain this to me because it seems dumb. Is this actually a problem in San Diego?
Zoo photo's

ARE
Hypothesis
Reason for wondering, they had previous knowledge of chimpanzee's acting strangely when they saw them at the zoo. They wondered why chimpanzee's do that, what exactly are those abnormal behaviors, and how far the extent of the odd behavior is.
Three findings
"20 percent of chimpanzees in captivity bite themselves." This shows recurring abnormal and unsafe behavior when chimpanzee's are kept in captive. "Social deprivation, and particularly maternal separation, have been suggested as causal factors in the development of abnormal behavior in captive chimpanzees." Of course, if a mother is separated from her child right after birth, they act out. This is seen even in human behavior. This is a great piece of information to support their science and it clearly shows reasoning of mistreatment of chimpanzees in captivity. The article also talked about how scientists have only started noticing this strange behavior fairly recently. This is interesting because there have been lots of the movies coming out in the past few years about Apes taking over the planet and weird stuff like that. Some of the chimps that they have been watching at their zoo, have been drinking urine. This is odd behavior for this animal. It was not recorded of the species living in the wild. This shows odd behavior specifically in captivity.
Results:
I think that the results are strong. They looked at different chimpanzee's in different locations and habitats. They had a wide range of focus. They calculated a lot of different behaviors in different categories. They presented their information in words and numbers for full understanding. They were committed to their research. They prove that these animals are different in the zoo than in the wild.
Vocabulary:
endemic- regularly found among particular people or in a certain area.
Husbandry- the care, cultivation, and breeding of crops and animals.
Ethogram-a catalog or table of all the different kinds of behavior or activity observed in an animal.
Cognitive- relating to cognition. cognition is the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
preliminary- the thought or action before something: preliminary hearing(own definition)
-denoting an action or event preceding or done in preparation for something fuller or more important.
Reflection:
Obviously, I think that animals should be free. I love animals and captivity is a bad thing. I have never been one to root for endangering the life of any animal(except, maybe bugs, but they don't count in my opinion), but I know that I love the zoo. I would not love the zoo anymore if I knew that mothers were being taken away from their newborn babies and that they were being treated unfairly. If these chimpanzee's well-being is at risk when they are being kept at the zoo because they get all cooped up in there and act weird or act out, then I think that they should be living in the wild. I think that animals should only be kept at the zoo if they are in danger in the wild. I believe that animals do live good lives at the zoo. But if they seem like they don't want to be there, I don't see any point in keeping them there.

Juno and Cassini Missions
I think that the Cassini Mission is amazing. The spacecraft has been out there for twenty years. It took it 7 years to travel to Saturn's placement in the solar system. It is running out of fuel, and it will no longer be able to run out there anymore. For it's final mission, they have planned to make 22 dives through the rings of Saturn, and then plunge into Saturn while keeping its antenna pointed at Earth to transmit it's farewell. All of the information and photo's that it is retrieving out in space is sent back to us through radio waves. Radio waves can travel that a million miles without being interrupted because it is an electromagnetic wave,it can travel through the space vacuum. This is a very special wave because nothing else can do this. This is how we have been getting all the data and photos and videos that the Cassini spacecraft has been gathering back to us,through radio waves. This is amazing! The spacecraft doesn't have to waste time traveling back to Earth, or have any passengers to manually collect the data and fly it, it doesn't need any of that. It can travel by itself, it finds its way around the Solar system only using coordinates that have been wired into it, it sends all of its information and findings back through radio waves, then it crashes itself to die after the long adventure it has been on for the past twenty years, it lets itself lay broken on Saturn for the rest of eternity. This is kind of beautiful. I love this dude, or whatever it is. I just imagine how sad the scientists and engineers who worked on her and tracked her and made her and have been watching and learning from her for the past twenty years, how sad they are to see her come to her end by herself. I don't know why I am calling it a her, but I think it's cool.

What I learned about making a publishable piece.

Description:
I took this photo on my personal camera- an EOS Rebel T6. This photo was taken last semester at Ocean Beach. I had been out with my friends taking a sunset beach walk after we went out to dinner and I snapped this shot! I love this photo and I would love to have a printed copy to hang in my room because I think it is that beautiful. I didn't even put much effort or thought into this photo. It was probably taken on Auto settings and Auto focus. I took this photo before I even knew my way a camera very well. But, it sure did turn out great! This photo isn't edited at all either!

REFLECTION OF THE YEAR
This semester has been successful for me. I feel like I have grown socially and I have become comfortable with High tech High and the way I learn here. I actually enjoyed the learning this semester unlike last semester because of the way that I was being taught. I responded well to the teaching style this semester and I am proud of myself for reaching out of my learning norms and being willing to try other methods and ways. I have never been a fan of the blog post. I don’t really enjoy keeping a blog, I don’t like reflections. I prefer to have things happen as they happen and not worry about reflecting of the process after it already happens. Going through the High Tech system since kindergarten, I guess i should be used to this in everyday-schooling. I am have just been so burnt-out of doing reflections since kindergarten, but to be honest, I never remember actually like doing them. That is why a blog isn’t my preferable choice of learning. But I am very proud of my blog this semester. It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and my website actually became something that I could be proud of. My physics page is packed full of colors and photos and long rants about the things that I like to learn about. I kept up with all of the post and I wrote more than the necessary amount, I like to go above and beyond on things that excite me and make me want to learn. I wrote about science and I didn’t have to be writing stories to create a good writing piece, I was able to reflect about a discussion and still sound professional on my blog. I would say that my blog from this past semester, is an absolute success. I got interested in things this semester and I had meaningful conversations this semester. I am very happy with my learning mindset and product in the new year. I am proud of the way that I have handles myself this year. I was able to be in a class with my best friend and have fun every single day, and still be very productive. Which is, very surprising. But that is the reason that this was my favorite semester. I was actually excited to come to school. I actually came to school. My attendance is much more impressive this semester, compared to last semester and my work quality last semester.
In humanities, I am proud of my examination and analysis of the assigned articles. I am proud to say that I got all of these done and, I made sure to not half-ass these assignments. It was sort of a series that we were doping all semester, and I can truthfully say, that I kept up the quality and depth of each assignment throughout the whole semester. Even when the workload became heavy at some points in the long semester, I made sure to keep up the good work. I also felt like I worked hard on every writing piece and I made the edits given back to me after I turned it in so that I could get full credit. I pride myself in getting 100/100 on every assignment because it really is not that difficult and it just shows laziness to not put in the little effort that it takes to get full credit. It’s not like the teachers make it hard here, and it is important to treat the work like it was any other assignment and just because it may be easier, not to give it any less attention or quality of finish. I also am very proud of the amount of extra pages I made for the book. It took a lot of extra effort that a lot of my classmates weren’t putting in. I look up to all the people that were doing all of the extra work. I ended up making nine full pages for the book! That is definitely something to be proud of. I made a full page spread image of a beautiful sunset. I also made the title page and the student introduction. This does not include my personal pages that I put months of work into. Those are the ones that I have the most pride for.
I felt a bit of a struggle in math this semester. That is not a grade struggle, seeing as I have stayed over 100% for most of the year. It was a teacher problem. I’m not going to lie, I did not like my math teacher this semester. It was hard for me to learn from him. I did not get along very well with him and his attitude toward me and the class was not something that I agreed with. I guess I just didn’t agree with his teaching style. I thought that he was rude and annoying and I didn’t respond well to him as my teacher. Although, I got all of my work done and I received extra credit points for the quality and length of my work. I accomplished great things. I take this math semester as a feat because I worked through my struggle and put aside my differences to do my work. At some points, I was seriously considering switching math classes, but I have to say that I am proud of myself sticking through until the end. That is something that I am good at, endurance. I found ways to help myself and sometimes I had to find a new workspace to complete my work because the environment was not what I was looking for. That is something that is great and that I respect about this school. I have the freedom to do that here and that is great for the way that I learn and my personality. That works very well with my learning personality and that is a very good reason for me to go to school at High Tech High.
Overall, I am proud of myself for the work I have done this semester and for the way that I have handled myself. I am very happy to have ended this semester on a good note and on a note that i can be proud of because last semester was not so good for me and didn’t really end well for me. I am sad that didn’t feel the way that I feel at the end of this semester, at the end of last semester. It just wasn’t a good experience. But what is most important, is that I ended my first year of high school well and that I am so happy with the last semester and I am content at the end of this year.
